International Working Women's Day

Mar 07, 2022

On March 8, 1909, working women in Chicago and women in the textile and garment industries in other parts of the United States held an unprecedented strike and demonstration in order to demand increased wages, the implementation of the eight-hour workday and the right to vote. This struggle has been warmly responded and supported by working women in the United States and around the world.

In August 1910, the Second International Socialist Women's Congress was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, attended by women representatives from 17 countries. Clara Zetkin, an activist for the German and international workers' movement and secretary of the International Women's Secretariat, advocated March 8 as International Working Women's Day. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People's Government stipulated on December 23, 1949 that "March 8th" International Working Women's Day was China's working women's holiday, and women had half-day leave.

In 1977, the 32nd United Nations General Assembly decided to make March 8 as the "United Nations Women's Rights Day and International Peace Day".
