Common failures of car turbochargers (part 2)

Nov 29, 2021

In fact, the turbocharger technology is now very mature. As long as it is used and properly maintained, it can have the same life as the engine, or close to the life of the engine.

Next, we will continue to update the common failures of car turbochargers following the previous tweet.

The power of the engine is significantly reduced, and the oil consumption is increased, and the exhaust emits blue smoke.

cause of issue:

(1) On the one hand, the gap between the piston ring and the cylinder liner of the engine is increased, resulting in poor sealing, and the output power of the engine decreases.

(2) On the other hand, the suction channel before the supercharger is not smooth, which leads to too much vacuum at the compressor end of the supercharger. The oil flows from the intermediate body of the supercharger into the compressor impeller, and enters the combustion chamber together with the compressed air. At this time, the speed of the supercharger drops, and the intake of the engine is obviously insufficient, which will show a decrease in power and blue smoke from the exhaust.

Solution:

(1) Check the outlet end of the turbocharger compressor, whether there are oil traces on the pipe wall, if there are obvious oil traces, then check whether the intake pipe before the turbocharger is flattened, whether the air filter element is seriously dirty, and the compressor needs to be replaced. Flatten the intake pipe or replace the air filter element.

(2) If there is no obvious oil trace on the pipe wall at the outlet end of the compressor, it can be concluded that the piston ring is not tightly sealed, and the engine needs to be disassembled and overhauled, and the piston ring or cylinder liner should be replaced.

The engine power has dropped significantly, and the supercharger makes an abnormal noise.

cause of issue:

(1) The sound of metal friction caused by the friction between the turbocharger rotor and the casing may be caused by excessive wear of the turbocharger bearing or thrust bearing.

(2) There is air leakage at the exhaust port of the compressor of the turbocharger, abnormal airflow sound, insufficient actual air intake of the engine, insufficient gasoline combustion, resulting in black smoke and reduced power.

Solution:

(1) If there is a sound of metal friction, you need to disassemble the supercharger and observe the wear of the rotor, bearing, and thrust bearing. If the wear is serious, you need to replace the rotor, bearing and thrust bearing.

(2) If it is the sound of airflow, the connecting pipe needs to be resealed and tightened.
